October is Meet the Blind Month and as part of the Special Rights Learning Series, Elmhurst Academy students were honored to have Gillian Ward and Coach Mike Svac from the Chicago Blackhawks Blind Hockey. Gillian is a college student at Loyola University, studying Communications / Marketing and Public Relations and a hockey player.
Gillian talked about her vision loss and introduced the students to her dog, Song. Gillian and Coach Mike talked with the students about blind hockey and the students were able to experiment with a blind hockey puck that is bigger, hollow and contains ball bearings that rattles and makes sound so the players rely on their hearing when they are playing. Prior to their visit, Elmhurst Academy’s Foreign Language Teacher, Mrs. Lardin introduced the students to the Braille Alphabet and worked with the students on writing their names in Braille. A special thank you to Gillian, Coach Mike and Mrs. Lardin for this wonderful experience.
